The Shades, also known as the “souls of the damned”, from Dante’s Divine Comedy, are the crowning figures of Rodin’s Gates of Hell.

Large scale sculptures of Adam and Eve were commissioned by the Ministry of Fine Arts.
Rodin imagined them placed on either side of the Gates.
Here, Adam is earthbound.
